Angelbabe and me are having a difference. Guys, is online shopping on Sunday against the plan?

nope

I'm pretty sure it is okay as long as your ox is in the mire---like there is a huge sale and it is one day only!

Breanne said...

It depends. Should web servers and databases get a day of rest?

Benjamin said...

Usually yes, but sometimes there are exceptions, like when there is a one-day sale on some super-trendy clothes and it happens to be on Sunday. It is also okay to buy church-related things, like skirts, on Sunday. It is also okay to shop on the inter-web on Sunday since you can do it without leaving you home. Glad to help!

spice2116 said...

no, technically you are not making anyone work because they wont ship it until monday so happy shoppings to you

www.jsayreallen.com said...

If, for some reason, you didn't get all your shopping done on Black Friday at 5 am, then the ox is definitely in the mire! As long as you only e-shop on Black Sunday and not other Sunday, it's totally ok.

Brock said...

Umm, only if your buying uggo things. But specially if it's stuff for the fam, then that's what the plan is all about

Kateastrophe said...

Totally no! The 'puters do all the work, not one single person is required to bag things, swipe credit cards or anything!

Kristina P. said...

Well, I once had a bishop tell me that the only reason shopping on the Sabbath is wrong is because it makes other people work. So, he said that getting a soda out of the machine is totally fine.

And since the Internet is run by robots, I think that the Lord would be perfectly fine with this.

Jules AF said...

Totally not!

Katherine said...

No way! Since the packages won't be delivered on Sunday, it totally does not count as shopping on Sunday.

Unknown said...

If it makes ya happy then i say go for it...
Of course I am the one who woke up thinking today was Monday as in cyber Monday yiyiyi

Jen Stewart said...

No way! You're not causing anyone to actually work, it's just placing an order with a computer that will ship it on MONDAY.

Now you might say that shopping on sunday is not what you are supposed to be thinking about on the Sabbath but if you are ordering gifts then you are totally on the plan since you are thinking of others. How much more selfless can you get?

So I say we call it 'ordering' and not shopping. Online ordering is a perfect Sabbath day activity...it's not your fault if you decide to keep some of the gifts you bought for your totally hot mom or sis later right?

Happy ordering...

Rach said...

NOT online shopping on Sundays is against the plan!

Kim said...

Um, isn't it called the plan of HaPpiNesS?

M.Howerton said...

shopping online on Sunday is totally ok. You are prob paying with a credit slash debit card and they won't technically get charged til Monday, so NO WAY is this wrong!

B Rad said...

Well, I'm not sure, but I'm really worried about you and JJWTers, frills. I mean, if your arguing, you have way bigger probs than Sabbath Day holiness, sweetie! You should prolly repent before your one-mind one-heart marrige disinegrates and you turn into too people with difrent opinions! So non-celestial.

*tara* said...

I would say yes, unless of course you're not actually BUYING anything :)

Olivia Meikle said...

As long as you are shopping for Christmas. I mean, how could anything about CHRISTMAS be against the plan?

jdb in AZ said...

Um, most e-bay auctions close on the Sabbath, so shouldn't we all have the 'Net connected to our cell phones so we can place last-second bids (called sniping) during church? Seriously, it's better than staying home from church.

Indeed, we may say we follow the admonition of the Rel Soc sisters. We shop all all sales, we hope to discover all bargains, we have purchased many things, and hope to be able to purchase all things.

Whitney R said...

I'm with everyone else. I've bought stuff Sunday. No one is sitting on the other end processing my order until Monday. I guess I've always felt okay about it.

Doo it.

Annette Lyon said...

The real question is whether JJWT wondering if it's okay to shop for YOU on the sabbath. At least, I hope that's the real question. Cause you deserve stuff.

Meg B said...

Umm, why even ask such a silly thing? What do you think is right? Well, that is what is right- hubbies are so silly sometimes when they forget the wifey is always right!

Anne said...

I served a mission, so I'm a higher spirichal plane, so I totally no it's AGAINST the plan to shop on Sundays no matter what. C'mon TAMN, if you have to question it, it's probably wrong. I'm fended that you can't keep the Sabbath day holy.

jlk said...

I don't do it. But, then again, I served a mission. On purpose. Stateside. And I'm a brunette. So....

Shala said...

Your righteous preisthood holder, angel baby is right sista TAMN! The sabbath day should be spend doing things that you would not normally do the rest of the week, ya know, like not havin "relations" with each other during the day. And other stuff like that. I find that if you keep your church clothes on the entire day it helps remind you not to be naughty.

Steve and Jamie said...

My husband and I debate this ALL THE TIME! Thanks TAMN!! You are an answer to my prayers!!!!

Jen said...

Some shopping is okay. If someone has to do the work like send you stuff in boxes and package it then it might not be like a very good thing.
but iToons is totally ok cuz it doesnt cost anything and all you do is click is a button to get music on your comp.

Jess said...

I don't think so. Cuz all those people that work for those companies have those days off, and your order won't be processed till Monday anyway.

Sadie said...

That is such a dumb question! Are computers people?? Does techonolgy have a soul? No, so you are not making any of Gods kids work so its NOT shopping on Sunday. Thats like saying driving to church is against the plan for making your wheels turn...mercy!

Unknown said...

TAMN, I think it's against the plan to use The Internets at all on the Sabbath, unless your looking up talks by GAs, looking for recipes, or checking your facebook because that's pretty much the same thing as VTeaching. oh, and reading blogs because those are like journals!

but maybe it's okay cause hello! TIME ZONES! It's prolly like Tuesday in Ohio or China or wherever your ordering from, so totally ok.

Token Asian Friend said...

If you ACCIDENTALLY type in the credit card numbers, expiration date, 3 digit verification code, cardholder's name, billing address, and shipping address, not realizing it was a Sunday, then it is what it is: a total accident.

Now, if the company CHOOSES to charge your card, then package and label your product on the Sabbath, the sin is totally theirs to bear alone.

Mom2my10 @ 11th Heaven said...

Yes, against the plan. would type explanation but breastfeeding...

Crystal said...

totally not against the plan because your credit card won't get billed that day, eye ee no money is actually changing hands on the sabbath.

Reggs said...

I think it's totally okay. And it's also okay to eat out on Sunday as long as you use the drive-thru.

cold cocoa said...

Just have two windows open- your shopping site and lds.org and go back and forth...it's all about balance! As long as you have your spiritual treasure right with your physical treasure you should be A-OK!

Anonymous said...

I've ordered from Church Distribution on Sunday, and if they let you do it, how bad can it be?

Mary said...

Seeing as you are my true spirtchal advisor...I am kind of stumped. If you and angelbabe do it as a family activity...then I think it would be fine. Its all about family, and not making people work...computers aren't people!

The Crash Test Dummy said...

OMGosh, I never thought of that. Thanks Tamn. One more thing for me to be conflicted about.

Marty said...

It is against the plan. People have to be at work to make sure the servers are up!!!

Unknown said...

It is totally against the plan, and so is blogging on Sunday. You should be visitng the sick and needier than you (basically everyone) today.

Heidi said...

Well, if you only do it this once, then repent and promise never to do it again, you are totally fine. Works for me all the time!

akidd said...

No way! It's all automated so nobody has to work, and it totally increases your individual worth, even if it puts a ding in your net worth.

Mariko said...

Just how are you planning on reconciling this, anyway?
In my world of justifications for sinning, I look on-line and put stuff in my shopping cart, but I don't actually pay until Monday.
Ha ha.
Oh, and I only do that because my husband believes it's against the sabbath, and I don't. I figure he's planning on going to heaven.

The Bronson Bunch said...

If it is bad then I guess we can have a party on the other side together in HELL!!!

Melissa Giles said...

Is it an activity that you would do any other day of the week? Then probably not. The sabbath is a day for contemplation on the Savior and a day for doing things he would want you to do that you don't do on other days of the week.

Kate said...

It's already Monday someplace in the world - use that if it makes you feel better!

KIM, ARNIE, AJ, RILEY, & DAISY said...

H No!! Are you making anyone else work on a sunday??? Nope- just the computer- totally not against the plan

KIM, ARNIE, AJ, RILEY, & DAISY said...

H No!! You aren't making anyone else work but the computer so its totally not against the plan!

Allison and Mason: said...

Girl... you know you shouldn't be thinking of those type of things on the sabbath! Where is your head??

Risa said...

OMG(gosh) TAMN! Don't you know that as the priesthood leader in the home that JJWT has ultimate authority on all things spirichal? I think you need to repent and return your online purchases.

Sami said...

No way. And neither is Redbox.

Jacque said...

Totally not against the plan. The purpose is to not make people work, right? Well, first, you're sittin on your butt with you half piece of sushi(fully cooked, mind you), and your laptop. No work.
Second, you're doing all the ordering yourself. Way fun and no one else is involved. Besides, they say it takes atleast 24 hours to process your order, right? How many Holy hours are there on a Sunday? 24! So, If you started ordering at 12:01 a.m. Sunday morning, they wouldn't even be processing your order until 12:01 a.m. on Monday. So, just to be safe, Order after your sacrament meeting. Just to be safe.

Alison Wonderland said...

I think it's ok as long as you bye from someplce where it's not Sundee.
But good luck with your marriage, I dinnit no U were having trouble.

Lisa said...

If it is then I am called to repentance!

The Fossetts said...

Well, You have a lot of comments! I'm not sure if you'll be able to read this since you have so many! Hahaha, I'm sorry for the comments that were upfront and personal.

Personally, I feel that buying anything in general that could wait til monday doesn't need to be bought on Sunday. True that "Angel Babe" does have the priesthood authority, which is why he is there to counsel. Use your righteous judgment. The way I choose is think to myself why it's an issue for the topic to arise, that usually helps for me to understand. I hope you feel better! :D

cchrissyy said...

sister, it's the internet - nobody will see you!

Anonymous said...

I would say that yes, it's against 'the plan'. If you are doing something for yourself instead of the Lord on the Sabbath, then technically you are violating Isaiah's counsel to 'put off thine own ways' for the Holy Sabbath.

Gretchen Alice said...

If it IS against the plan, I'm totes going to h-e-double hockey sticks for the massive amount of Christmas shopping I just did.

Jacqueline said...

Um, no, it doesn't ship till Monday!!! Silly!!!

Rachel said...

SRSLY, u had to ask?!!???!

As long as ur a full-tithe-payer ur good to go and do whatevs with ur moneyy! Ur "fire insurance" is payed! No burning for you! :]

An I know u and JJWT are full-tithers. Cos you're so blessed and all even tho he's in Med Schl. Ur Bish must be so proud :]

Erin said...

Sef not! The credit card goes through on Monday, not the Sabbath. Totally okay.

Tooele Brezoff said...

Yes sorry it is like doing a slow dance with the devil him self.
Have a great day!!

SuddenlySouthernCyndi said...

Hilarious question! Of course, I find it funny for reasons other than most which makes me laugh that much harder. The comments are priceless as usual, especially those that are answering your Q [in all seriousness] with a "yes"! TAMN, your brilliant and creatively "hidden humor" is not lost on me. Let's have some more "against the plan" questions!

Victoria Elder said...

pssh online shopping on sabbath is so Kosher! It doesnt actually run your card for a few days & no one ships it for a few days So I say what the biggie? your totally rightie on this one tamn'ers

Paula -- CutieFruity said...

I surf ebay every sunday morning. You aren't making anyone work, so, yeah. It's up to them if they want to break the sabbath and pack your order that day or not. They can't ship it on sunday, so shop away.

Ashley said...

It's like buying a diet coke on Sunday from a vending machine. Pretty sure a vending machine doesn't count as a man servant or a maid servant. JJWT is just wrong on this one.

alex dumas said...

I'm with Ginger. It won't ship until Monday. But you "technically" are not worshipping on the Sabbath if you're not thinking about Him.

alex dumas said...

natalie said...

No way!! It doesn't even get processed until Monday.

Kari said...

Ummm...are you even SERIOUS?! Just charge it and it's not like you're spending any money AND you can todally listen to church music and wear Sunday clothes while shopping online. Like, wth (oops...letter swearing...sorry, TAMNers)it's not even a big deal! Except if you buy ug/frump/spintsy stuff...now, that's def against the plan!

Becca Hatch said...

Tamn, I too received the Christmas Anthro catalog on Saturday, so who can blame JJWT for wanting to get a head start on your most perfect Christmas ever? Don't judge him- you know the XS, 00, and 26 jeans always sell out first.

Still wondering? Try shopping deseretbook.com next Sabbath Day. Can you complete a purchase? There's your answer.

Hillary said...

the bible was written before the internet was invented by Al Gore, so its all good.

Against the plan.

BUt did Shala up there say no RELATIONS during the day on the Sabbath? Serious? Sunday afternoon are the BEST times for relations. Plus the kids get one of those great church videos in, you know, to keep them occupado.

martha said...

Um if you break out in a sweat than I would say it is against the plan. If you don't sweat I say shop til you drop!

Ashley said...

I can't believe you even blogged on the Sabbath TAMN! Sometimes I wonder how much you actually know about the plan!

GladysIcanbe! said...

two thoughts--if I order from your e-store and get one of those way cute hoodies, would that be breaking the Sabbath--is your estore open on Sunday? and what about the church distribution center website, can you order from them? If the answers are yes...

Kristen said...

No way, cause it won't hit your bank account or credit cart for a few extra days...which clearly won't be the sabbath, right?:)

Dani Lou said...

Um, TAMN? I'm kinda 'fended you were even blogging on the Sabbath.

Blogging and Bliss said...

gees you all! You do what you feel is right.

Where The Wilds Things Are said...

I prefer to keep the Sabbath Day holy, and have never felt guilty while shopping online on Sunday.

EmJay said...

NOpe, and neither is ReDbOxinG a movie!

Rebecca said...

Technically, no.

Did you know people at UPS & the post office work on Sundays, even though you can't go mail stuff? There was a guy in my ward who was a contract worker for USPS and had to work on Sundays & holidays all the time. Which is so dumb, 'cause they use the holidays as an excuse for things taking longer, but they are still moving mail on those days! Whatever!

So my point is that we are all mailing stuff and ordering stuff that will probably be handled by an employee on a Sunday, and there's nothing we can do about it! As long as we aren't directly going to a store and making a purchase face-to-face then it's out of our hands and we're still totally richous.

Lauren said...

Its fine I think cuz the order probly wont be processed til the next biz day!

The Sanderson Fam said...

I want to know where it says "keep the sabbath day holy by not making people work" You're saying God will strike me down for buying Tylenol for a child with a fever because I made the poor lady at Wally world ring me up, but spending hours surfing the web for a bargain is okay. Spirit of the law people. Spirit of the law. Even buying a soda from a machine, filling your car with gas. Get things done on Saturday, or wait until Monday. Shopping is shopping.

lovin the empteenest said...

If you want an official determination as to the appropriateness of internet shopping on Sunday - why not test this . . . go to the church distribution website, put something in your shopping cart, checkout and if your credit card takes - consider that your shopping action has just been seriously so blessed! Another test (though a little less authoritative) try the same thing at deseret book's website.

Okay so like a few weeks ago I totally ordered my BYU Las Vegas Bowl tickets from the BYU website on a Sunday. Everyone could order their tickets on Sunday not just the platinum Cougar Club awesome members like me. And since BYU is totally run by the prophet I figured it must mean it is okay to shop on Sunday right? But then our brave boys in blue totally LOST the game so maybe it was the Lord punishing us for selling tickets on SUNDAY. So confused.
