my dc calling

Ok ok so since the sad news about Ruth everyone wants to know about church here in DC and weather I got a new calling.

ugh.

Seriously I have been sooooooo dilegent here.

I told the bish that w/ the twinsies {who are signing and crawling sooo good} and w/ our internship I was way busy so only had time for big slash visible callings like YW prez or maybe, if they were in a real pinch, RS prez. Just wanted him to know we were willing to serve. So helpful right? Ya, I fly back to Zion alot and NYC trips and stuff, but both times I've been to our ward in DC I've been super service oriented for example reminding them to make handouts cuter so ppl will read them {personally I never read anything in boring font}, showing off my ponder-pout to help them see what it looks like to be thoughtful, teasing the beehives about there VL, etcs.

Know how they say the church is the same everywhere? It's not. They don't even have the good news minute here. Good thing I just get up and share mine any way.

Being a cute example is the best.

Spot on with VLs and the good news minute. Just moved to Zion and was astounded by how many women wanted their fair share of spotlight about their child pooping in the big girl potty or their cat killing a pesky spider. And I remember being the president of the VL club when I was a beehive. Uber cool, right?

Even if I don't rilly have any "good news", I participate. I'll make stuff up if I have to, because it'd be So Sad if people thought I had a frowny life.

Amy said...

Holy cow - did you seriously just say "teasing the beehives about there VL". Wait...let me check...yep you did. You are awesome.

Adam said...

I do the same thing with my deacons ;)

Boring fonts = college graduates. So sad that they couldn't get married sooner like you!

I wanna move to DC, I hate the good news minute! (and never had one until we moved to AZ, which is like the very southern tip of Zion.)

Janice said...

What exactly does your ponder-pout look like? I don't know what your bishs prob is... we were here like a week and had our callings. Maybe you're too available. Just a thought...

No good news minute!? I'm crying a little bit....it could be from laughing but I'm not sure.

Madame Palmkey said...

No good news minute {shocked gasp!} please tell me they at least have friendship baskets, reciting the theme, a visiting teaching moment, music appreciation and a spiritual thought so the teacher has 10 minutes for her lesson!

Kim said...

So unfair! You are a natural-born leader--maybe let the bish know you received confirmation to be a prez. He'll prolly totally thank you for the inspiration!

jamie said...

lol I am so glad you do the good news minute anyway!

Leilani said...

So when will you know your calling? And how do you do an emoticon for a frown smile???

Anita Wells said...

so glad your their to help out--you're good example will help those wards in the mission filled understand what we know in Zion--church is a weekly fAsHioN sHow!

TAMN, get out! are you in my ward?! Because they don't have the good news minute in my ward here in DC..

Liv said...

In my new family ward, everyone has to say their favorite vegetable or what they like about winter.

It makes me want to vomit.

Maya said...

Took me a minute to remember about the VL club, lol. I dunno what's wrong with your DC ward...we have the Good News Minute in Ohio and in California! I love reading your blog every day; it keeps me laughing.

Kerry said...

Damn you're good at this. "both times" you went to your ward about killed me. i'm sure you're permanently outta town.

Haylee Abney said...

no good news minute??!!?!?!?! whaaaaaaat?!?!!!

JenB said...

What's VL? Am I not righteous enough to know??

Anna said...

Hahaha.... ah, TAMN you make me so GLAD that I live in DC (well actually Virginia) and not in "Zion"/intermountain west.

Frog Prince Las Vegas said...

I feel really dumb. But it's been a LONG time since beehives...VL??? Someone help me out here.

Amalie said...

NO good news minute? How do you survive out there? HAha, I hate the good news minute with a passion, it's dumb.

ashley said...

What no good news minute! Our ward got rid of it as well bc of jealousy. Ugh seriously evry1 just was jealous of me.

Little Lovables said...

I went on a little vaycay to Missouri this weekend and they didn't have the good news minute either... they called it a "shining moment"... so weird, right?

Will said...

VL? Please elaborate for the uniformed.

Lisalulu said...

you speak such a fun language, but sometimes I rlly rlly dnt KNOW what you are taking abt? help someone what is VL, (here in the REAL Washington we don't speak that language)

MW said...

TAMN! You're doing it wrong! (Not to criticize or anything, luv you!)

You should only volunteer for BIG SLASH VISIBLE callings that don't require weekly Church attendance or any time or effort during the week. Anything else would crimp your schedule, sweetie. Priorities!

Me, I volunteered to teach Gospel Doctrine. I got it too! Yay for me! (You think I'm kidding; I'm not.)

Emily said...

The "teasing the beehives about there VL" line made me snort. I remember listening to seniors in high school proudly talk about their VLs. Only in Utah.

Jules AF said...

Wait, so you don't even have a calling yet? You're so unrighteous.

Unknown said...

I had never heard of a good news minute until I went to my mom's ward in Provo. I've never had one in CA or here in DC. Too bad.

"Signing and crawling sooo good"? Uh-oh, I think my baby is delayed. I knew it.

Cecily Jane said...

The only way this post could be better is if you had *accidentally* spelled it "taseing" instead of "teasing." That would just be awesome.

T. Wimple said...

glad I dunno what the "good news minute" is...

Living in the mission filled gets better the more I hear about the Motherland.

Amanda K said...

Seriously, this is about 1/3 of our ward. "Both times I've been to our ward" pretty much covers it!

Frown-smile emoticon :-S

Token Asian Friend said...

I agree. Visible callings should only be for attractive people, and the less visible callings for the, well, have you ever see a hottie making the ward bulletin? I didn't think so.

Unknown said...

Ugh. Clan of the Cave Hair, please don't dis on AZ like that. My parent's ward back home has no good news minute. Are you living in Mesa/Gilbert? GET OUT OF THERE and move to Phoenix, where Mormons are few and far between.
TAMN, don't worry, your time will come. Just hope they don't make you a cub scout den leader. (frownsmile.) Or... a ward MISSIONARY!

Tanya S. said...

I think you're in my ward.

Grandma Cebe said...

OK..call me old and out of touch, but what is VL?

Seriously, so blessed! said...

are you guys even kidding me!?!?!

VL = virgin lips, as in, never been kissed!

JenB said...

Ohhhh, I guess that explains why I had no idea what it was

Allison Hill said...

wow I thought I knew all the silly YW lingo but VL was new to me!

Mal Pal said...

back when we had the good news minute I always loved when an engagement announcement or finishing a marathon was followed by 'I got a package from my missionary' or 'my brother is engaged' I liked to follow those up with awkward blank stares, implying 'thank you for wasting my time with that completely unnecessary piece of information'

Deborah said...

We have the good news minute in my ward here in the DC area. And, GET THIS, missionary minute on fast Sunday!!!

cyndi said...

I am dying Seriously. Our stake split and we with a few other families/friends were put into another ward. Like 10 families. We were told it was because they needed us for "leadership" let's face it that was just said to make us feel better LOL For reals one of the couples (yes were friends with them I'm embarrassed to admit) totally told the Bish no when calling were extended to them and they were not
"leadership" callings. They said "We got put in this ward because you needed leaders." Whatever Next thing you know they get called to the primary presidency and ward exec sec. I honestly was dying who does that?

Laura Z said...

Thanks for the info about the VLs - the only part that was confusing for me - but then I've never lived in Zion - only Sin City (where all the Zionites stop on their way to Disneyland :-)
Keep it up; we need the laughs!

VL = Virgin Lips lol lol lol

how sad are the laurels who brag about their VL. and compliments on the extra blinky blog.

Laurel said...

Uh-oh Tamn. Brace yourself for the Compassionate Service Committee. :}

Mandy said...

OH. EM. GEE! Hilarious, TAMN. One of your best!

Diane McAffee said...

Why don't wards start a "Sucks to be me minute" so ppl can, like, simpathiz with each other. It is NOT ALL HAPPY VALLY out here. Theirs hair cuts of death and missing the finalee to SYTYCD because SOMEONE had to go to my S-I-Laws wedding shower. (How inconsiderate can a person get)?? I, for 1, would like a chance to vent - in public - and hear Awwww's from my fellow sistrs.

I admit I had to dig deep to dredge up the memory of what VL meant. But I finally found it, like a buried treasure.

RoeH said...

I hate that 'good news minute' with a passion. Why does every ward have to follow along something so stupid like little puppets. Sheesh!

Mrs. Clark said...

Token Asian Friend, you are the perfect foil for TAMN! I recently read Anita Loos' book, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. TAMN is the Mormon 21st century equivalent of Lorelei Lee!

Thank goodness we don't have show-off minutes in my DC ward.

dharvey said...

You're twins are crawling at 4 months old? Seriously, so precocious ! :-) XOXO, D.

Laura said...

ummm... are you so far from Zion that you forgot it was the 24th of July? Hello! You should take pictures with lots of flags in the background - DC is a great place. b/c somehow July 24th is about Patrioticism and flags go awavin...

In one of my previous Zion wards I was serving in the nursery. One of the girls ran around punching and hitting the other girls, so we had her Mother come sit with her, because she was rotten. Come to find out, it was us nursery leaders that needed all the help because the next week the stupid girl's mom came to "Watch" her daughter, but also had a lesson prepared for the kids, as well took over the job of the chorister and had singing time taken care of as well. her Daughter still ran around and hit and bit all the other children, but appearantly I needed more help as a nursery teacher than her daughter did, so she just let it go. So thankful for people who are willing to be an example. You should go check out the nursery so you can get things up to snuff before your cute twins have to go. Some nurseries need A LOT of help.

Science Teacher Mommy said...

They so need you in the YW. No chance you'll corrupt the cuties with encouragement for the mish.

Diane McAffee's suggestion to have a "sucks to be me minute" was awesome! I vote for that!

Although I must admit that I live in Utah, and I like the good news minute and have even participated. In fact, I did announce my brother's engagement (sorry mal, but not really sorry, just mentioning it even though I don't mean it. Luv you!)

Only the truly awesome get an experience like living in a D.C. ward. I sure hope you enjoy testimony meetings as much as we did :)

The Van Leeuwen Family said...

oh TAMN that's terrible. And on top of that how did you survive without having Pioneer Day in DC? Hopefully you threw your own shin dig there for everyone that's never experienced one of the best holidays ever - you know those poor souls who have never lived in Zion.

Dorothy said...

Good news minute is the best ever!!!

The Ransoms said...

Oh my gosh TAMN--I so miss good news minute in my ever so righteous BYU ward. I'm back home for the summer living with my parents in the KCK mission field. I miss how at BYU every week one of my sisters in Zion would announce their brother just returned the previous week from serving his mission in the jungle in Brazil and the girl behind our pew would already be engaged to him. Seriously SOOO Righteous.

Andrea Wyss said...

Sad that all these people didn't kno what a VL is. They must of been like Ruth when they were younger. How sad!

erica said...

so no calling then?? hum. frowny smile.

Stephanie said...

I love the "sucks to be me" minute. That could be a lot of fun.

Misty, you should have submitted the mom's name for nursery leader. Then, you could spend your time hearing the "good news minute" each Sunday!

Emmy said...

Good luck with that one :)
Oh, and the only time I have heard good news minutes is when I have been in wards in Utah. Never in Illinois, Colorado, Arizona or California... so I think you might be waiting a while for that one.

Mormon Bachelor Pad said...

If things just don't seem to work out between you and JJWT in the end... would you ever be into a younger guy?

I'm being for serious!

One day I want to go visit a ward where no one knows me and during the good news minute announce "I just found out, I have 6 months left to live!" And then in the awkward silence that follows explain "It used to be 3!"

Kerry said...

Melly (above) made me pee my pants!

Also, I hope you get a big visible calling soon bc those are the only ones that count in heaven.
