{mani'd fingers crossed}
Anyways when Lyvs and Tridges were 2 mos there shots were the saddest things ever. They turned so red yelling and I screamed and held them and they held me and it was just horrible and I was so greatful for the extra lortab i'd saved from my natural birth bc it calmed me way way down. And now that their 4 mos {and a little} its time for shots again and I'm soooo nervy!!!!
Will they get all polio or autistic?? Or is it better to vaccination them now? I read about it, and by read I mean asked the other girls I went to hair school with, but I make decisions about my kidses lifes almost exlusively by asking the internets for anicdotal evidence.
WHAT SHOULD I DO???
Being a parent is so hard. If your not one, your adorable but everything in you're life is trivial and you just don't get the heighth of my love and worries.

Just use your amazing mommy instinks. You can always take them to Pottery Barn Kids afterwards to make them feel better (and you too)
You should defiantly NOT vaccinate. You're kids might end up artistic if you do. Then, how would they get into law/med/biz/dental school like loverbuns? No artsy-fartsy kids for you. (Well maybe for Lyvs so she can decorate her house way cute, but for shore not for Tridges--how could he support a wife (and future daughter and son-in-law and grandkids) on that kind of salary??)
I'm just sayin'.
Wow TAMN, your decisions are so grown up. I wouldn't even know what to do. Good luck.
AHHHH! :) 1ST COMMENT HERE! Yay. Cute website. Makes me smile like everyone else.
Usually I resist commenting but couldnt on this. So, this shots topic is quite contraversial, and not really so funnny, actually.
Though the thimerosal is much less in all of them but some flu shots, it is still up in the air about their safety and effectiveness. I have links on my blog that have great info. (www.lifes2questions.blogspot.com) Might not be as informative or accurate as your beautfy school friends, :) but in case you have NOTHING ELSE to do,:) go to some of these links. And...the anecdotal evidence is astounding..look around you in the schools at the sheer number of kids with special needs. there you go!
Hugs to you and your cuties! I know the spirit will guide you to make the best decision...(er..say no to those needles! :)
TAMN,
although my life is trivial, I've gotta say, get the vaccines. Those reports that kids can get autism from them are pretty unfounded. Most of the time, the child probably had autistic tendencies beforehand, and are not a direct result of the vaccination.
Vaccines do far more good than bad.
But, that is just my trivial point of view. What did the hair school girls say? You can probably trust their decisions.
I like your comment at the end like a "PS" type where you said "if your not one, your adorable but everything in you're life is trivial and you just don't get the heighth of my love and worries." The way you said is it so cute, but it is true. I am not blessed yet to be a parent. I have 13 neices and nephews so I like to think I know a little about kids, but I have no idea what it would be like to have to worry that something/one is hurting your baby and you can't stop it.
I am a new reader and just wanted to say I really enjoy reading your blog. How can I be more like you?! ha ha I am so busy with working that I hardly have time to update my own blog.
Happy writing to you and thanks for always being so happy and upbeat about everything!
Uck. That's a tough one TAMN . . . I mean, you have the majority of the medical community saying one thing, and Jenny McCarthy says another . . . what's a Mom to do?
Ask JJWT to pray about it. He's the patriarch of your family, he can make the final decision . . . then it's all on him and you get to dodge the tricky decision making!
No vaccinations! Don't do it, don't do it!
Shoot my life is trivial! Someday I'll be as super blessed as you TAMN and have my very own set of 'lil spouse and me. One day...
My kids' doc said Hollywood celebrities have caused a big worry that shouldn't be a worry. Shoot the kids up. Seriously so awesome that "there" "their" and "they're" are the most mis-used words on Mommy blogs, and you nail it every time.
Wow, I'm the first!
Autism has never been linked to shots in studies, so no worries! Better safe than sorry.
You dint stand in the hallways or weight in the weighting room while JJWT stayed with them while they got they're shots? Your so brave!
I hate shots!!! My little ones both SCREAM when they get shots and I hate hate hate it!
Polio is so not hot.
The chances they'll both get sick from the vaccinations is really low. So give them both shots and at least one will survive.
You should pray about it.
I can't wait until I'm apparent so I can finally understand love! Can you imagine being a childless non-member? They don't understand/experience happiness OR love! Sad!
Since they were grown on diet coke and sugar-free jello I'd say it's a little too late. No worries, your Dr will give you all the meds you need...
Yup, they cood totally get "all polio or autistic," but you don't want to be a tree hugger and not vaccination them, riiight?
Why pass up another opportunity where they can hold you while you scream together? What a bonding experience that must have been. Don't deny yourself those precious moments to be cared for by your little ones.
I'm pretty sure that EVer letting your babies cry makes you a bad mommy. Just sayin'. (Sympathetic frowny-smile)
MMM, Lortab.
wow, epic spelling and grammar errors. good job! and whatever you do, do NOT vaccinate!
You know, you're really not all that far off. I've seen posts pretty darn close to this. You rock.
Oh. When I read the title that said "Time For Shots", I thought you meant tequila. Never mind. Carry on.
Well, we all know what Oprah would do.
Vaccinate those purty lil' twins so they don't make the rest of the kiddos sickos.
Unless you really look up to Jenny McCarthy--then follow whatever she says. Hollywood is always right.
Heighth. You've nailed that one.
Totally go for the shots. Some of those diseases they vaccinate for could give the twinners ugly spots! Not worth it. Plus, Tridger is old enough to be a real man by now, he should be over screaming.
Well, I am going to answer this one seriously because I don't think it's all that funny. All my kids are vaccinated. I don't want to mess around with diseases like polio, and I don't think it is fair for other parents to not vaccinate their kids and just piggyback on my kids' immunity (because, after all, the reason they don't have to worry about the diseases is that people like me are vaccinating their kids).
However, I am leery about shooting a kid full of 4+ vaccines at just a few months old. I do think there is something to the idea that some people are genetically more susceptible to toxicity, and that giving kids large amounts of vaccines at the same time increases their exposure to toxicity. So, I vaccinate my kids, but I space them out so they get 2 shots at a time. It means that it takes longer to get their shots and involves more doctor visits, but I feel better about doing it that way.
Oh, and TAMN, hon, your babies are 4 months old. Yeah, I know they already sign, blah, blah, but they get the shot and cry for a minute and are done. Then they forget it and smile at the doctor at their next visit. Wait until they are 3 or 4 and can bite, kick, run away and remember their last shots so that they start all of that as soon as you arrive at the dr. office. Fun stuff. Good luck. (That's my way of saying, "Your life is so trivial right now" [insert sickly sweet smile]).
Favorite part: "I was so greatful for the extra lortab i'd saved from my natural birth bc it calmed me way way down". Boy do I know some folks like this...four months after birth.
Can I just say that I love, love, LOVE it when newbies comment and leave real advice. Makes. My. Day.
Make sure you schedule the shots for Friday afternoon so you can have an excuse (grouchy babies) for skipping Sacrament meeting on Sunday! Healthy twinners and a Sunday off. BONUS!
TAMN, your post was super funny, but some of the comments may be funnier!
The lortab bit made me laugh out loud!!!
Love it
too bad you didn't get the c-section at the hospital, you could have had a vicadin.
Sad but true: I used to work at the University of Florida veterinary hospital. There'd never been canine distemper in Florida before 2007, but all the sudden it was rippin' across the state. There's a vaccine for it but some people didn't get it for their dogs because they didn't think it was "safe."
All the dogs who got it had to be put down. : (
So funny. I was just about to write a vaccination post. :o)
I knew my life was trivial when I was single, and thought all that would change when I got married. Boy was I wrong.
You deal with so much.
Let's just all take a moment and reflect back on what we learned by watching Law & Order: SVU (the one with Hilary Duff).
Uh, TAMN, if your kids get measles or rubella you might have to actually, uh, take care of them...
Um, you should totally vaccinate, b/c how will Lyvs be able to frownsmile when she has the MUMPS???
I love your posts that deal with "serious issues." You nailed this one. Plus, you get funny comments.
Your blog makes me love the internets.
Well, I WUD suggest that you shud vaccinate just cuz it's our responsible soshal dutey to keep those icky diseases out of the mainstream! But, we all know how u are prolly the eseption cuz there's not much chance you'd ever get into anything icky anyway, right? So let all the rest of the wurld take care of that garbage. All you hafta do is stay inside for the rest of your life!
oh, and vaccinations are not your biggest concern. that should be for when you dr keeps making you come back for "well checks" every other month just so he can squeeze $20 out of you all year long. at that point, you're saying, "what the freck, I paid $20 bucks, he better give my kid a shot!"
just give em some infant tylenol 30 mins before the shots and it will help lesson the soreness in the muscles.
The only thing more funnier than this totlly awesome blog, is when comments start with "I normally think this blog is funny, but this is a serious issue..." and they proceed to get all preechy.
It's all fun and games until somebody's opinons are front adcenter! Haha! Frownsmile!
Glad I could provide so much after-the-party entertainment.
First of all, lortab rocks. You should always have one of those handy for stressful mommy moments. I mean, that's not breaking the word of wisdom, right?
Second of all, for an issue as serious as this, you should definitely go with whatever Jenny McCarthy says, or even better, what your hair school friends TELL you Jenny McCarthy said.
I thought my life had meaning but you've helped me to see how truely trivial everything really is. I won't REALLY know anything deep or meaningful till I find my own JJWT to plant his seed in my (currently) vacant and barren waste land of a womb.
I'm so lucky to have you to straighten things out for me.
Life makes sense again!
Hi Tamn-- love your blog-- been reading since Day 1. As a mom and a licensed child care provider, I extensively researched the issue of whether or not vaccinations cause autism. I spoke with numerous medical professionals, both pediatricians and nurses. I read as much as I could on the issue. There is NO scientific or medical evidence that vaccinations cause autism. They're very safe, and it's a good way to protect your children. Take care, XOXO - D.
Boy howdy, I love to see what comes out of the woodworks in the comments! Don't let the gran-ew-la's get to ya TAMN - keep those babes up to date!
Def go with the shots, do all you can to keep the kids from getting ugly facial scars. Just as lortab works for you, be sure to give the twins a little motrin and a little benadryl just before you leave. They'll be relaxed and pretty much pain free and the other moms will bask with jealousy in your awesomeness.
Wouldn't you rather your kid die of some supposedly eradicated disease than have autism? Duh. Don't vaccinate. Death is worse than autism.
(And before someone comes and yells at me, I'm completely joking. COMPLETELY JOKING. I do not believe death is worse than autism. I work with kids with autism. The end.)
Having a kid with autism, that is not something to joke about. I am really hurt, you will never know the pain of having a kid with autism and not knowing what caused it. You are taking this a little too far.
If you don't give them shots they will be home sick a lot and interrupt your day. Besides it's part of the plan.
for some reason I'm having a hard time joking with you about this one...just hits too close to home I guess.
every time i think i can't love you more, you do a post like this that is so right on it's kind of eerie.
I also love that people are still getting offended.
This gets better every day.
Heighth!!! Love it.
Yucky Lortab. Makes me do pukers all over the place.
Oh, how I love when people take you seriously!
I've drugged up my kids after a doctor's appointment, but I've never thought of drugging up myself...
I say let them have the SHOTS. You don't want their pretty skin blemished and their bodies deformed by scary diseases.
Wow. You have outdone yourself with this post. Love you TAMNers!
It just gets better and better.
Well if there was a mystery about what JJWT is in, we can DEF eliminate med school because they are all a little coo-coo about getting vaccinations. Oh, that would likely inlcude Dental school too, since they are almost docs too... And MBA because JJWT would get STATS and want his kids to be as healthy was possible. So that leaves Law cuz then he could sue if anything ever did go wrong!
Oh and Micchone's comment was hilarious!
It's way more inportant and "look at me" if your kid gets polio and limps around for the rest of his life, so def avoid the shots. (I kind of think the people that skip the shots are secretly too lazy to keep track of when the kid is supposed to get them and think their life is too busy to run to the doctor's office for the next round.)My doctor said the more kids a person has, the more likely they are to be behind in getting the kids' shots. Since you have twins, you can either 1. be on top of the game and frown smile at anyone who says they haven't done the shot thing yet, or 2. complain that your JusT ToO BuSy to get everything done.
I love love the comments that take this seriously...and it definitely explains why I'm always offending people, because gosh, they're just so dang sensitive about EVERYTHING!
Don't vaccinate because only super nerdy educated people vaccinate. Its like way trendier to not vaccinate, like Jennie Mcarthy says. Instead of listening to the american board of pediatics (NERDS).
Nobody's kids are BORN WITH a disease. It's contracted through some other means. You don't have to vaccinate away some deadly virus or anything, because it isn't there. The number of kids in the US who get their shots is significant enough that pretty much it's rare if your kids DO get something serious. You can vaccinate your kids if you want, but here's my experience:
I used to get my oldest child vaccinated on a regular basis. She was ALWAYS getting sick!! One time I couldn't get in to the doctor because I was really busy, so she missed her shots. And she wasn't sick anymore! So I stopped taking her to get her shots, and she hasn't been sick anymore!
I got my second child her first vaccination, and 2 weeks later, she was in the hospital again for breathing issues and a really high fever. I don't vaccinate my children anymore. And they don't get sick, they haven't gotten polio or mumps, rubella, or any other horrible disease. I take them to church, the gym, playgrounds and parks, and to other people's houses and parties, and my kids haven't gotten sick from anyone else, and nobody else's kids have been gotten sick from mine.
And you know what? A baby's immune system is still developing after it's born, so it doesn't even recognize the vaccination after 2 months!! That's why shots come every 2 months for a while.
That's just my experience. Other people have different experiences. It's totally a personal choice, and nobody can make that choice except you.
Hahahahahahaha! Seriously Sarra, no one's kids NEVER get sick..... They're not getting polio, mumps etc because the rest of us are vaccinating our kids, so you're welcome! And of course you don't vaccinate away something that isn't there, you vaccinate so diseases aren't "contracted in some other means".
Very funny post, but the comments are the best ever!
I'm glad that so many people can laugh at everyone else but not themselves......
Keep up the good work, TAMN!
They're not getting sick b/c the rest of us put up with the side effects and go ahead and vaccinate our kids. If we were all like you, Sarra, we'd have outbreaks of polio again. Sheesh.
hard choices. wowzer.
the thing is: if your dh can't hold the babes while they get shots, don't do it...
Do YOU rilly want baby snot on you when they cry??????
Read the book by Dr Sears, it's called the Vaccination book. I decided not to vaccinate my baby, and i'm so happy i haven't!
My belief on it, is that it does more harm than good. A lot of vaccinations shoot your babys immune systems.
Love this post. Only in Utah would vaccinating your kid even be up for discussion. Makes me proud to live in such a forward-thinking state! Thanks for the post TAMN. I can't get enough.
I vaccinated my twins. Do it. Plus when they start KinderG they'll have to have it and if you have to start late then YOU have to keep track and it just gets confusing.
Oh TAMN... such tough choices! We will be fasting for you to have clarity of thought. Have you thought about praying it over with your doctor?
And have you asked Lyvs & Tridges what they think? Have they signed their opinion to you?
Love YA!
Why not look to another blogger for advice? I especially love reading comment 320 about the 2 month old who contracted whooping cough from an unvaccinated child and almost died and now has lung problems. And 368 about the aunt who contracted Rubella while pregnant and now her daughter is deaf and has brain damage. And 532 about the mother who contracted rubella while pregnant and now her sister has severe disabilities. No one EVER catches these dizeezes right?

word-or-two-about-vaccinations
What you need to do is give them Baby Tylenol/Motrin BEFORE you go. I did that for my baby and it worked GREAT! She cried for 30 seconds b/c it still hurts, but I had given her medicine 30 min before we got there and so it had already kicked in and she quit cyring after 30 seconds! :D
Wow Sara! Your kids immune systems are powerhouses!!
I wonder what got rid of polio and smallpox and rabies and cancer and all of those diseases cuz surely if one isn't born with a sickness it came from a shot?
Mwaaaa Mwaaaa Mwaaaa. So stinkin' funny. When I read the post I thought, "Does she know what kind of nutters are going to come out of the wood work?" Duh, obviously she did. You need to do a post on eating meat and the Word of Wisdom next. Maybe you could throw in some pesticide crap too... Oh!Oh! Oh! Organic versus Non organic. Let's get it all stirred up. So very very serious.
just make sure your kiddos don't see you when they're getting their shots so they don't think mommy is mean... then give them sugar-water or a sucker after and they'll cheer right up!
You know what makes TAMN so awesome? The way she holds up a mirror to the banality, superficiality and intellectual laziness that unfortunately afflict our culture. I don't think it's the choice to vax or not to vax that's even the issue here, just as the circ post wasn't so much about the choice to circ or not to circ, but the fact that her decision hinged on Tridg being "matchy-matchy" with JJWT.
My goal in life is to be someone else's anicdotal evidence. I've *always* wanted to be influential.
You should probably let them get there shots, because rilly, the only ppl who dont let there kids get shots are those weird moms with short spiky hair who where sick hiking sandals in PUBLIC! PLZ dont be one of those.
Vaccinate them. Why risk them getting ill (maybe even die) from things that are so preventable nowadays? Parents who refuse to vaccinate their children are just as crazy as the ones who believe that they should keep their dying children at home and pray for them, instead of taking them to the hospital. Or, the ones that claim to be "vegans" and feed their babies only water and soy milk, not even soy formula, and the babies end up dying from malnutrition and anorexia. I'm risking getting flamed here, and while I know that this blog is just a parody (and a great one at that!), I feel that I have to say something, since I care a great deal for children. By the way, the whole vaccination-causes-autism is completely unfounded and poorly researched. ;-) Parents, especially moms, will find ANYTHING to blame their problems on.
Well said, MilkyMadonna. "The way she holds up a mirror to the banality, superficiality and intellectual laziness that unfortunately afflict our culture." The result is sometimes hilarious and always instructive.
Why don't you vaccinate ONE of the twinsers and NOT the Other!?
Then, you can report to us in 10 years what the outcomes are. (course, your kids will hafta age like soap opera kid time)
TAMN< seriously, you are soo lucky to be able to do these kind of cute little experiments. Your goin to make a great PTA mommy!!
Hehe, I like Melissa's ideas. I can definitely see the organic vs non-organic topic coming up, since the twinners ought to be starting solids soon.
There are some sad, sad people on here. It makes me appreciate how blessed I am. *sigh*
TAMN- you really shouln't offend people as often... they might stop going to church and gossip about it to their neighbors.
It all depends if you think public health is a public issue or private issue. Certainly it's a private issue for you, sooooo NO SHOTS! Plus, how cool to say you are opting out of them for religioius/personal reasons, then everyone will ask you why and you can be the COA all over again, every year!
Little Lovables' idea sounds like a winner. What better way to celebrate your twinsies' specialness than by conducting your own twin study? Then later when you're trying to figure out how to get anything meaningful out of a sample size of two, you can tappity-tap away on your oobersmart laptop at playgroups and be all cute-but-intimidating. If anybody asks you what you're doing you can make a sexy pout and truthfully answer "I'm working on my SAS, duh."
i totally get the blog and all the mocking of other mommy blogs. but i find it disgusting that you would even joke about autism. you should be ashamed.
I'm confused by some of the posts about vaccinated people getting sick from un-vaccinated people... If they are vaccinated why are they getting sick? My niece has 7 kids who have not been vaccinated. Wish I'd had the info she had before I vaccinated my son. I would not have done it...and NO, it didn't come from Jenny McCarthy.
This blog is VERY funny....but this subject isn't
