Oh, you have to get those little flushable liners. Then your cloth diapers don't get gross. You can do this, TAMN! Go green! It will make all those selfish women in RS who use disposables feel guilty and think how much more earth-friendly you are than they are, and isn't that your point?

I used cloth diapers for my first child. A diaper service is the only way to go! Plus, in these hard times, it's the economically responsible thing to do -- providing jobs for others.

Way to get your crunch on, girl! Okay, let's be real here, it's only a matter of time before EVERYONE is doing cloth diapers, baby wearing and co-sleeping because it JUST MAKES SENSE!
As far as being grossed out, check out this post for my solution to the problem:

Yeah, so gross.

get some designer ribbon and make them into burp clothes.. isn't that what they were made for?

Kristi said...

Ummm, yeah, what exactly do you do with the poop?

Emily said...

My mom has lovely stories about leaving dirty cloth diapers soaking in the toilet and freaking out my dad.

Maya said...

If you were still Breast feeding TAMN, you could just toss those diapers straight in the washer! It would save all the grossiness!

Goob said...

OMG! I can't believe you thought cloth diapers were actually for diapering! How cute! TAMN, you've been in Young Women's too long and missed out on the "how to be a stylish mom by turning cloth diapers into burp-clothes so fashionable and cute and totally covered in sequins, crystals and ribbons that your babies can't lay their sweet little heads on them" home-making class. *frown-smile* maybe you better make a run for the craft store today sweetie.

Lechelle said...

You only have to use them once!

Then you can tell everyone that you are green and hardcore. No one has to know that you stopped using them.

Bri!!! said...

Then send them to me because I am a green mama.

Karen said...

TAMN Seriously do you want to do that with two babies? I mean it is great to be green but people just don't understand - you have to change double the diapers, which means double the poop. Stick with the disposables and do something else to go green. Try buying the super cute reusable grocery bags.

I can't even imagine.

Cloth diapers?

Then what will we use to fill the landfills?

I say use cloth diapers if you hate yourself and disposable if you have healthy esteem.

Natalia from Piece N Quilt said...

Nasty. Just stick with disposable diapers.

Talina said...

TAMN, it's not about actually USING the cloth diapers. Just making other people THINK you are using them. Just hang some out to dry or something so that everyone can see how green and righteous you are.

Shane, Meg, CJ, RJ, and AL said...

Only use them when you go out in public, and put a disposable diaper underneath. It's all about the image anyway, right?

Melissa Durtschi said...

For the LOVE....Really!?!

That's NASTY ! ! !

Wendy Kae said...

Oh, buck up princess. Tridger and Alivyiah will love them on their cute little butz.

Jules AF said...

But what do you do with the poo? That's the real question. Or is that too indelicate for you?

ewwwwwwwwww

That's how the hippies make all their money, TAMN. They suck you in with the promise of saving the planet, then once they have your money, they run off to save the Amazon and leave you knee high in poopy liners.

Danielle said...

To heck with the gran-ew-la factor. Have you seen some of the new diapers out there? You can buy custom-made diapers out of designer fabrics that cost more than your entire outfit. Cloth diapering isn't about being green, it's about who has the cutest bum and how much you can spend on your "stash."

Annie said...

HAHAHA!

Kemi said...

I agree with Talina... if you put them out (although, really, who hangs laundry out to dry anymore unless they're on Trek or something), not only will people thing you're green, but they'll wonder how on EARTH you keep them so white.

And then you can tell them you know they'll understand why you can't share your secret, while flashing them your best frownsmile.

Grandma Cebe said...

You must have misunderstood. Cloth diapers should be used as burp/spit up cloths and when the twinners are no longer spitting up, recycle them to the best dust rags ever. You're still being green.

Oh wait, the twinners probably don't spit up and you most likely have a maid.

In that case, I don't know what you're going to do with those cloth diapers.

Madame Palmkey said...

The twins aren't potty trained yet? Frownsmile. I guess they aren't as precocious as you like to suggest.

Trent!? said...

Gross.

Have you stopped shaving your legs now too?

Jeannie said...

Oh Tamners, I love it when you think of the whole planet. That's SO something you'd do.

Sarra said...

Use the cloth diapers and get a service to clean them for you if you're concerned about the poo getting all over your own washer.
Disposable diapers are NOT cute, even if you buy Huggies or Pampers, so cloth is the only way to go - besides, the disposable diapers all have problems with blowouts and leakiness, and that will mess up the kiddies' cute little outfits.
GO GREEN - USE CLOTH DIAPERS!

dharvey said...

For my baby shower, my "green" relatives gave me a year's worth of cloth diaper service. They take away the used ones and drop an entire bundle of clean diapers at your doorstep. You can get Queenie, Glamma, or your folks to ante up for the diaper service. You will then be fashionably "green" and save yourself a lot of work. Love you, XOXO - D.

Just put a ticker on your side bar saying how long you've been using cloth diapers. Once that's up, it's okay to neglect taking it down when you stop (or don't start) using them. Problem solved: keep your image and don't do anything inconvenient. Kind of like your lactating ticker... :}

To everyone who asked what you do with the poo: You swish the diaper clean in the toilet water, then flush it while holding onto the corner of the diaper so it doesn't go down with the poo.

I remember that because my mom got mad at a babysitter once for leaving a cloth diaper unrinsed in the toilet and wouldn't call her to babysit again. I rather think the babysitter was relieved about that.

Shelley said...

Cloth diapers? Baby wearing? Co-sleeping? I say push the little buggers out of the nest as soon as possible. A 3 year-old should totally be making her own breakfast, not hanging around in a sling. And all I have to say about cloth diapers is that if crowding the landfills with disposable diapers is wrong, then I don't wanna be right. Then again, my youngest (of 3) is almost 7 years old, so it's a little late for me to take the diapers back. Sorry, Earth!

Mer said...

I don't understand how anyone even sees which diapers you're using. Don't you keep the widdle cuteywooties thoroughly covered in gymbereeeeeeee and pseudo-handmade clothes from etsy?

Organic disposables, TAMN. They look all green, but you don't have to deal with the poopies. Bonus: They cost twice what the other diapers do, so you look greener AND richer.

Maja said...

HAHAHA!! You are such a valiant pioneer.

burp cloths, yep, that IZ the anser.

Ewwwww. Just don't stop buying deodorant TAMN. Oh wait, your richus self probably doesn't have B-O!!

Eew Tamn. I am totally green and hot, but that is just gross.
*frownsmile*
Your mani just won't alow for that type of groosness!

I know a woman who once sold a hand-embroidered diaper for close to $100. (Totally true story.) I think the only way to use that diaper is to put it OVER a disposable one. Which is what I recommend you do with your cute custom fitted cloth diapers. You did buy cute custom ones, right? Not plain old white ones? Plain old white ones, as everyone else has explained, are meant to be made into cute custom burp cloths. Oh, sorry, I know you already know all that . . .

P.S. Here's another true diaper-related story. I'm the second of nine kids, and my mom used the unfashionable plain white diapers (and yes I do know how to rinse out a diaper in the toilet; why do you ask? Also how to hold my fingers behind the pin so that if something gets stuck it's me and not the baby. Also how to rub a diaper pin in soap so it will slide more easily through the layers of cloth. Not that I have ever availed myself of any of this knowledge in the diapering of my own five children.) Anyway, once at some sort of social gathering my mom said, "Oh, you should never throw away old diapers," and she was about to finish the sentence with "because they make great rags," but before she could a woman interrupted her with, "You have to stop having babies some time." FRUDE, huh! (That's your pioneer-times history lesson for the day.)

Um... TAMNers, not to be rude or judgy or anything, but shouldn't they be using the tinsy-winsy little potty by now?

Maybe you should look into paying your fast offerings again. Frownsmile.

Anyone who thinks cloth diapers are "green" hasn't done the math.

Sharah said...

Wait- why are you changing diapers??? Are there no mia maids in your new ward?

Alicia said...

You're going green? Does that mean the fur on your boots is...

FAKE?!

In Utah, we always suffer from water shortages, so washing cloth diapers is ENTIRELY WASTEFUL. We have lots of empty land, so disposable is actually the greenest thing to do once you get back home to zion.

Lauren said...

When you see how much water you have to use you will think twice about it being green to use them and quickly make the switch back!

Shannon @ Lifelong Impressions said...

We bought all the diapers we would need prior to the twins birth. It took us a full two months to get up the courage to use them. It was easy and we love using them now. There are so many benefits to them over the disposables.

Sarah F said...

my mom used them and said it's a cinch but i can't stand the thouwt!
be granola by recycling water bottles instead. (i'm sure you drink bottled water, right?)

Interesting how many commenters can't seem to joke about this! Especially one side of the debate.

Chareth Cutestory, Maritime Lawyer said...

You should open an Etsy shop with designer cloth diapers - and use the prophets for the diaper cleaning service!
It's win-win-win.
You will make money, you won't have to wash diapers and babies everywhere will have designer bums!
It would be such a selfless service to the less trendy babies out there.
All you need is a Bedazzler and some sequin ribbon. (unless your criket can cut material?)

You're welcome.

How sad that you don't have any Mia Maids to change diapers for you any more. That's just what happens in the mission filled. SO SAD for you. :} Not only do I use cloth diapers, but I have so many people LINED UP to make sure my dainty fingers never have to touch anything gross. So sad for you.

SERIOUSLY....you are nuts. You have twins and changing double poo/pee diapers. That is just sick for even considering cloth diapers. ha Be green another way. That stresses me out just thinking of someone doing it that way.

Liz said...

To the commenters who think disposables are more "green" than cloth, TAMN for once got it right: cloth is the true granola option. http://www.slate.com/id/2187278/

FWIW, we've done both cloth (BumGenius diapers) and disposable, and there was way less poop in our lives with the cloth ones. The paper ones blow out just about every time, vs only once so far in 9 months of cloth diapering. I'll take nice predictable poop that stays meekly in its diaper over a Vesuvius that could blow all over me, furniture, and innocent bystanders at any minute. ; ) Seriously, they're fabulous. The poop isn't so bad, you can get a darleen little kitchen sink-type sprayer that attaches to your toilet and spray it right off in no time flat, the hassle is pretty minimal. And we don't have to take the trash out constantly.

Also FWIW, I grew up in a paper-milling town (Green Bay, WI) and those factories are seriously so rude to the river. You can smell it for miles.

The studies about cloth diapers being bad for the environment tend to get funding from sources like Proctor & Gamble, and I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I am a biology grad student and it's definitely true that if somebody really wants a certain answer, they can make a study that'll get it. Back during the federal hearings tobacco companies also found real scientists to testify that cigarettes don't cause lung cancer.
